Default Green cree xpe-2 voltage confusion

I've recently constructed a pvc stunt saber with a green cree xpe-2. It's running on 3 aaa's at 4.5 volts without a resistor. It lights up fine, though it gets a little warm around where the led is sitting after a while. Does this setup have the potential to fry the led?

Probably not, because AAA's don't have a large (or long) current draw. With that said, I would strongly recommend you put some type of a resistor on there though. You're going to go through AAA's though, and the life of that LED might be shortened some.

"Yeah, yeah, I've heard it all before... you want blindingly bright, super loud, running 1138 blinkies off of the cheapest sound card you can find AND you want all of it to run on a battery the size of a dime, and run for a very, VERY long time. That one cracks me up every time..."
