Thread: Celtic engraving attempt

    Default Celtic engraving attempt

Hi all, I looked around a little the other day for some sabers with celtic style engraving, sadly though there were not many i found. I thought its a shame that nobody seems to do it as it would look fantastic on lightsabers, so in that light I decided to attempt doing a little myself on my last failed project. the two designs I used are based on the "sailors knot" also reffered to as the "lovers knot" and I like how they turned out ^^ note that this is my first attempt at engraving so any tips would be appreiciated

enjoy and if you want post some of your own celtic style saber decorations ^^

It looks pretty good. I know from experience how time consuming it is to do detailed engravings like that. You might consider putting something into the engraving to help it "pop" more. Aluminum black, paint, etc. could all work, if you were so inclined. Although if you're happy the way it is, then don't change it.

I think you did a great job on that Xene. Your line spacing and thickness looks to be pretty consistent through out each engraving. I've tried my hand at engraving too and it's not an easy skill to learn. And me personally, I'd leave it how it is...gives a nice subtle design aesthetic to your saber.

totally time consuming, probably took me a good few hours for each bit XD and i am considering using some paint to make them pop but this was more of an engraving experiment/ practice on a failed project so to me it dosent matter much, though i plan on using them if I do another build ^^

I don't have the patience (or steady enough hands) to do intricate work like that anymore. Which is why I'm glad there are a few good tutorials on acid and saltwater etching. The engraving gives a different look, and I think it'll look great on a finished saber.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments ^^

Anyways I just couldnt leave it like that so I ripped out all the (fried) guts of the saber and hid the holes under some cardboard and electrical tape and continued engraving even more ^^; And I like how it turned out even more now ^^, though a heads up, trying to use acrylic paint tin the engravings is super tricky, even using a toothpick as a brush ;D

    and the pics ^^

If you'd like an easier way to paint the engraved area, then consider this: Apply a few light coats of spray paint to the area with the engraving, let it dry, and then take a sanding block and remove the surface paint. All the recessed engraving areas will retain their paint, but the surface will come clean.

Far easier than using a paintbrush.
