    Cool Pyralis by Cannibal869

    PYRALIS

I've actually had this general design in my sketch book for quite some time, but it never quite seemed "right", and in truth, it went through several revisions before this final version.

My main challenge for this saber was to make the best possible and most functional saber I could for under $50 actual out-of-pocket cost. I decided to use an old Hasbro Obi-Wan econoboard that had originally gone into a different saber, but was pulled out and has sat in the scrap pile for quite some time. Actually, I wasn't even sure the board still worked, as some of the tracings had pulled off This obviously required some jury-rigging, but I'm glad that the essential board functionality still remained intact. You might notice the FoC feature, which I managed to once again implement without a PC/CF or Spark/Igniter board, courtesy of the NPN transistor (which was also a scrap piece left over from prior testing). In fact, other than the thick walled MHS shroud material and a few things I needed to buy towards the emitter end of the saber (prices listed below), the majority of the supplies were either sitting in junk piles, or were salvaged from prior builds (translation = during prior builds, I may have used these pieces, but then borked them up somehow during the machining or building process, so they then essentially also went into the junk pile). Such was the case for the batteries which, like the soundboard, I wasn't quite sure would still work. There is a sort of "inside joke" about the theme of this saber, which hopefully some of you hard core sci-fi fans will figure out....

    SPECS:

    2 x 16340 Li-Ions
    custom assembled/re-flowed tri-rebel: Amber-Amber-White
    Hasbro Obi-Wan econoboard
Main blade: Amber with White FoC
    DPDT main power switch
    DP3T activation switch
    ball momentary accessory switch
    TCSS 20mm speaker

    PARTS LIST:
    MHS Blade holder type 1 : $15
    Tri-Rebel : $16 (approx.)
    Tri-Rebel lens: $2.25
    MHS Heat sink: $9
MHS thick walled shroud - gift
1.25" sink tube (choke section) - leftover scrap piece
Hasbro Obi-Wan soundboard - salvage from prior build
Flickering candle accent LEDs - salvage
    DP3T switch - spare parts
DPDT main power switch - salvage from prior build
    ball momentary switch: $1.18
    20mm speaker: $6
Rubber O-ring for grips - leftover scraps from prior build
NPN transistor - leftover test piece from prior build
MHS clear bullet tip - salvage
    16340 Li-Ions - salvage
    quick disconnectors - salvage
    MHS Pommel - salvage
    10mm amber accent LED - $0.28
assorted size clear polycarbonate tubing - scrap from prior testing
polypropylene for lining grip area - scrap
assorted screws and set screws - spare parts
appropriate resistors and wiring - spare parts
aluminum tabs for pommel - old diet coke can (free at work)
hot glue, E6000, JB weld, heat shrink wrapping and wires not counted.

    TOTAL COST: $49.71

    GLAMS:

start by making the main grip area and contained battery holder out of spare polycarbonate tubing.

this was going to originally get a single Li-Ion 18650, but that turned out not to be possible electronics-wise.

    and finally the finished saber:

    FoC

    and just because I can

Wow. Really really nice. I'll be honest, I don't get the inside joke... but I'm cool with that. Wicked cool saber.

That's a gorgeous saber. Love the illuminated belly.

I'm afraid I can't read what you wrote on the saber, but I'm assuming it's "Serenity".
We all have to start somewhere. The journey is all the more impressive by our humble beginnings.

It is indeed "Serenity" or Ning2jing4 in Pinyin. Love the saber!

An awesome saber for under $50?? Incredible! It's a great hilt, and i love all the illuminated sections! The kanji also turned out great.
"Diet Coke can mod" - i will definitely have to try that someday

Thanks guys, and yes it's the Chinese characters for "serenity" (although like most translations, I think it's not quite an exact translation). With that in mind, hopefully you get the inside joke now.... But if not, google the saber name and see what you discover

I'll try to get a video up later.

Excuse my language, but that's ****ing Awesome! That's the first Firefly class lightsaber I've ever seen. Nice job with the name too. Very clever.
