This may be a dumb question, but the wiring diagram have lead me to wonder. Do you have to close the loop to get the wire to work? (i.e. strip and solder both ends of the wire)

nope, just make sure you do a good connection on the one end of the wire that you are connecting to the plug and you are good to go.

Yeah, you can solder individual strands, but the more strands soldered that way the more connections you have to worry about breaking.[B)]

Your top diagram with one end connected is the proper way to hook it up.

I was wondering that myself. I read in another thread that the second way will fry something, but I don't see how the first one will work...
