    Trace the blade in white on a new layer.
    Create 3 or more new layers.
    Change the color of those to the blade color you want.
    Change each of the dulplicate colored layers to a "multiply" setting.
    Gaussian blur each colored layer to varied degrees. Start at say 15, then 10, and finally 5.
    Rearrange the layers and blur the white layer if it needs it.

    ryan-w does other effects too like lightning he also does after effects aswell.
