Erv of Plecterlabs suggests using 28awg wire for his boards. I use 26awg for most connections and 24awg for battery and led connections. The JST connectors sold here work well with those gauges. If you go up to 18-20awg you might have issues with the wire being too large for the solder pads.

After reviewing my build, and subsequent overkill; I'm onboard with those recommendations.
(Braiding the 18awg for solder removal and recycling haha)
I'll stick to 24awg and 26 for all the hookups.
