The cheapie Hasbro sound card I have runs on 3 batteries. That's 4.5 volts. It is possible that the board is designed to only handle 5 volts, so the 6 volts may have fried the sound chip. You might need to add a 5 volt regulator (or 4.5 volt if you can find one) to the sound card to keep it happy...
I've had the same thing happen before. No solution that I could find. A new soundboard is definitely your best bet.
Those who have earned the right to boast have no need to.
