gundamaniac - I have a cheap "multipurpose" machine from harbor freight. Anyone who has a basic lathe, drill, and dremmel should be able to do this. Though I should add, it helps speed things up when cutting down the grips if you also have a drum/belt sander.
As to the covertech, I did it like that because that's how Mace Windu's saber is... I assume they extended it so it would hang correctly, without the grips getting in the way.
Those who have earned the right to boast have no need to.
