I looked everywhere. The employee just was like WTF??? [?][?][?]

    I should just order online...

Unfourtunatly, unless you get an "old timer" (take no offense please) the employees can tell you about TV's and cell phone plans but know jack $#!^ about CB radios and what is in those mysterious parts drawers.

I only go to my Radio Shanty first thing in the morning when the manager first opens up, good fella that actually knows the difference between a diode and a resistor[]

As far as a 6AA holder goes, have no fear cause Underdog is here...

I've been running my 5w Green on a 6v setup.. it does light up bright and all, but I have no 3w to compare against in this format. I just ordered a few of those 6 AA holders and I'm thinking of running it with some NiMH 1.2v rechargeables to make 7.2v. We'll see how much better it looks with another volt added. []

You'll need to resistor it at that point. 7.2V is above the forward voltage and 6V is not.

^ But if the max forward voltage is 8.31, wouldn't 7.2v be okay?

A little not well know fact is that a rechargable battery when fully charged will be higher than what it is rated at. Motorola uses L-ion batteries for some of their portable radios and they have 6 cells at 1.2 volts each for a total of 7.2 volts but when fully charged you will typically see a voltage of about 8.4 volts which could exceed your forward voltage so it would be best to use a resister.

i have a question about my 5 watt, i am running it on a 9v (brand new battery) with a 2.2 ohm 5w resistor and it doesn't seem very bright, i am pretty sure my red lux 3 is brighter. any idea what might be wrong?

Like Do-Clo said fully charged they always are higher then the rated voltage.

Also, a resistor helps "smooth" it out although you don't have a lot of surges with batteries.

Check the voltage on the 9v. I'm now using a NiHM 9v and it registers 9.3v on a full charge. Unfortunately I can only fit one 9v in my hilt right now, and because my 9v is only 170mah it doesn't last too long.. but for about 5 minutes the green or royal blue 5w luxeon is extremely bright! I intend on picking up a 250mah or more 9v soon, so hopefully that will help duration until I figure something else out. *I use a 2.7ohm 5w resistor btw.

I was mostly refering to min forward voltages, but yes.
