If I'm not mistaken, you could hook a microcontroller to the PWM pin and create a range of effects, such as flicker, pulsing, clash on flash, fade-in/fade-out, etc. Of course, programming the microcontroller and embedding it in the saber is the hard part (to put it mildly), as I have learned in my dabbling in Arduino. So, for just about everyone, the PWM pin will be of no use.
There's always a bigger fish.
