    Default Flying Bucket

Just finished my rebel pilot helmet. I was a little nervous about this build because I'm not that good at painting. But the few mistakes I did make I was able to hide with the weathering.

    so any way, enjoy

Great job. I like the weathering.

I can tell that's a Richie's helmet by the sloped area at the right side of the mohawk, it's a crisper angle on the other side. The helmet I bought 6 years ago looks like that too. I guess he never bothered to fix that one buck.

You're weathering is kind of random, IMO. Try studying the way things really weather. Paint wears off in the high spots, dirt and grime collect in the low spots. Most people don't put enough thought into that, from what I've seen.

I guess you didn't see any of my posts in the RL boards about using cheap electrical tape to mask for painting, instead of actual masking tape. Masking, or painters tape is good for straight lines, not curved ones.

Good try. It takes time and practice to develop good painting and weathering skills.

As someone with experience in painting and weathering props and helmets, my criticism is meant to help and inspire you and others in the future.

Thanks guys, and thanks J-Lo. I always try to take criticism in the spirit it was intended.
I did use electrical tape to mask, but i must have missed the CHEAP part. The good stuff just doesn't want to bend. Lesson learned.
I think I could do a better job now that I've tried my hand at it. I may get a new set of decals and give it a new paint job after I get the rest of my flight suit together.

The cheap electrical tape also doesn't leave as much residue as, say the 3M brand.

I recently masked a helmet for a friend who has neuropathy and can't feel the tape, and I had to cut slits in the to make it go around the tighter curves, but I don't remember having to do that for mine.

But that was almost 6 years ago, so maybe I just don't remember cuz I'm getting senile.

I really dig the color scheme you've chosen, and for a first attempt, I can say that it's better than my painting skills!

It takes practice, like anything else.

When I look at stuff I painted 20 or 30 years ago, it makes me laugh at how crappy the stuff looks. Especially when I used the wrong paint.

But there was no internet back then where I could look up tutorials on how to do things.

My painting skills have improved a lot in the last few years.

I painted my helmet 6 years ago, so I know I could do a better job on it than I did back then, but I still think it looks pretty good.

You'll find pics of my bucket here, 4th post down:
