Actually my own pet theory before Halo 3 was that at the end he would be revealed to be the son of Sgt Avery Johnson...but that didn't happen...still could in a future game I guess...but NOT in an anime please!
Actually with the Halo 3 that came with the helmet they pulled something similar to a Samus Aran moment, in a comic that came with the game, with what looked to be the master chief removing the helmet and being a girl but was not the actual master chief from the game but another retired spartan.
