    Default Something's a bit out of date...

    Quoted from "http://led.linear1.org/myth-of-the-5-volt-led/"
    The myth of the 5 volt LED
    Filed under:

    * LED basics
    * Practical LEDs

    A commonly encountered question on message boards and in my email inbox deals with the elusive “5V LED,” and goes something like this:

    I have a 5V blue LED, can I hook it directly to the 5V supply in my computer?

    or alternately:

    I hooked up my 5V LED directly to my computer’s PSU, why was the magic smoke released?

    The fact is, there are simply no LEDs with a forward voltage of 5V. So how does this confusion arise? There are three possibilities. We’ll go over them all.
    Pretty sure there are some LEDs with a 5v forward. XD

    It's from some website (copy and paste the url, if you're curious, I kinda was), it's not a post from these forums.

    Yeah, 3-4 years back.
    But the point is that it is out of date.

    So, why don't you find the info about 5V LEDs and write to Rob Arnold and see if he'll write an update, if it bothers you so much?

    Maybe he doesn't even care, since it's archived.

    I've seen that website before as well. I don't think it's a bit of "bad form" to inform the guy about it... whether he cares or not.

    It's true though that... attempting to "police" out-of-date information--whether via the internet, physical library, or otherwise--is a tough war to win, full of thousands of battles: some pointless... some with good merit.

    In this case... the guy is attempting to "state some facts" when, it is--unfortunately--simply about the state-of-the-art AT THE TIME IT WAS WRITTEN.

    This is why it's generally bad to say "finite" things like:

    "There is no ___ volt component for a ____ widget."
    or...
    "No one will ever really need >1024MB of RAM... just make a hard limit on it, and forget about it."
    or...
    "We can save some bytes of data by representing the year with only TWO digits instead of FOUR! It'll be great... we'll save tons of memory, and--really--what difference will it make?"
    or...
    "We'll release the LAST three movies *first*... and later on, we can beef up the backstory and make three NEW movies--but these ones will take place before the original three... which came later. These new ones came before the old ones. Yeah. It'll be great!"
    or...
    "Hey. It's my work. My blood, sweat and tears--not yours! I know you all have your opinions, but I'm calling him Jar Jar and that is that. And yes, he says 'meesa' alot. And he falls down. But that's FUNNY--you just don't get it... but my audiences will. You'll see. It'll be better than Chewie was. Peter Mayhew was expensive anyhow. More expensive than CGI, lemme tell ya..."
