Thread: Hilt for movie prop

    Default Hilt for movie prop

Hey guys, new to the forum. Im interested in making 2 lightsabers for use in after effects only. right now Im using a Master replicas vader saber, and you cant really stunt well with it. I basically want to make some cool handles, that will accept long dowell rods for stunt work. It doesnt need to light up or make sounds. However, I wont the handles to look great. Any ideas on how to do this, or can you direct me to the proper forums, Ive had no luck.

Any particular style you were looking for? And what size dowel do you use? You can go to the saber builder to experiment with different looks and it will even give you all the part numbers and price. If you want a 3/4" dowel then you will need a EL blade holder, if you want a 1" dowel then you will need a LED blade holder. Here is the link to the saber builder on this site: http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/mhsbuilder/ . Let me know if I can be of any help.
May the Force be with you.

Like Wadeh said, I recommend the parts from the store attached to this forum. You can make a nice looking custom hilt that is light and comfy, and then just attach a dowel or plastic blade the same way we use the clear ones, with a retention screw.
Yes, I spell it sabre. I just like it that way.

Remember kids, using Darth or Master in your user name won't make you cool.

Here is a example of what I like. I like it because its simple, looks cool, and would be easy to script fight scenes for a cool movie. I would however rather go with the 3/4 blade, since I feel it would look better rotoscoped. The 1" blade may make the blade render thick. The Master replicas I use now is not even 1 inch, and it at times can be a LITTLE wide.

You could make a sweet PVC saber like this
    http://www.dougie-doright.com/tutorial.html

I was able to put a dowell in that. I think mine was 1/2 inch. A thinner dowell won't hurt as much when you get whacked with it.
You can simplify the design to not need a dremmel.

Or you can do this and use PEX pipe

Either way you can dress them up and make them look quite sweet.

I like the lightsaber provided in my link I created with the lightsaber builder($87), but with that cost, Ive seen some pretty sweet ones already put together on Ebay. Guess I was hoping to build a nice lightsaber handle for under $50.

there is always the sinktube saber route, its probably the least expensive for just a basic hilt. and it is a clean slate as far as design goes, you can add whatever you want to it

What exactly is the sink tube, home depot? My brother owns a plumbing buisiness maybe he could hook me up?

wheelman, welcome to TCSS forums. Take a look around and don't forget to read some of the older posts or try using the search box. There IS a shop attached to these forums where you can find most of the items you're inquiring about (all the parts in the saberbuilder for instance, MHS pieces, sinktubes, bladeholders, 1"-to-3/4" reducers, etc)

Sorry if that came off sounding rather harsh. 'twasn't my intent

this is the basic sinktube (the 1 1/4 tube works good too). you can get these at lowes or any other hardware store, but their prices are about the same, might as well get all the parts you need at one place
