I've mentioned this saber a few times. It's about time I posted some progress pictures.
I'm calling this an Obi inspired saber. Although I'm trying to get as close as I can, it's not accurate enough to call it a replica. I could get closer, but it would take a lot more money.
Here's the parts breakdown:
Blade holder #3*
3" section with a groove machined out by Tim*
One sink tube adapter*
(*all machined down to 1.43")
1.43" ID Aluminum tubing from Online Metals
Custom Obi pommel
1.25" aluminum vacuum cleaner pipe (fits in the MHS with only a little sanding)
Lux III bin 1 cyan
616 Joe Jedi sound board
Tim's speaker
4.8v AA NiMH battery pack
Recharge port
DPDT switch
Here's what I've got so far:
The outer tubing is covered with painter's tape because I polished it, and I don't want to muck it up. I'll trace the cutouts right onto the tape. I really wanted to make the red knob the switch, but I just couldn't make it work. I have a plan to disguise the switch in the black grip, so you can hardly see it.
These are the little red LED indicators that Tim sells. I pulled the LED out, cut the bottom part off, and filled them with clear epoxy. When I drill the holes for them in the blade holder, I'll go all the way through so the light from the blade shines through them.
This is the red knob from the store. It will do until I find the proper anodized thumb screw. The brass knob is my creation. I used the brass pull chain guide from a ceiling fan. I ground the top flat with my Dremmel and epoxied a screw into the back of it. Then I mixed a little purple model paint with some epoxy for the little dome. Not exactly like the original, but close enough for me.
Here's the unaltered pull chain guide:
I have a lot of work to do yet. I have some tubing to cut out for the grips, I have to paint the pommel and blade holder, and I have to do the cutouts on the outer tubing. I'll post more progress pictures as I have them. I have to pull the sound board out again, so I'll take a picture of the internals too. Maybe if Erv releases the next run of CFs before I finish it, (and I manage to get one), I'll throw one in and scrap the 616.
