The only real sound editing option for me (sans spending piles of cash) is Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

It's free, robust, reasonably stable, and supports Nyquist plug-ins of which there are many.

sound forge does have some advantages over Audacity but at $300 or so it doesn't have THAT many :)

There is almost nothing I used to do in sound forge that I haven't been able to do in audacity, for basic editing, conversion, etc the two are very similar.

I've tried Audacity 1.3.4 Beta. But I did not see a way to save the files as 22050, Mono Unsigned 16-bit little-endian files. So this could be a problem.

I use Goldwave to batch convert my 22050, Mono Unsigned 16-bit little-endian .WAV files mixed with SaberSoundMixer to .SND files. Then I run a batch file that renames the filename extensions to .RAW.

Note: You can execute 1500 commands before your required to purchase Goldwave.

I use Cool Edit Pro v2.0 to edit and mix the sounds. Cool Edit Pro was purchased by Adobe and renamed Adobe Audition (which costs like $400).

I've used Sound Forge and Goldwave.
THe handy thing with Goldwave is the 'mechanise' function. It's the same function erv' used to do the 'droid' voices for the menus, so all I had to do was say "Chicken Saber" in a monotone voice and presto: menu sound!
