Thread: Rotoscoping question

    Default Rotoscoping question

    Hello,
Alright, dont beat the crap out of me if I get this wrong[].

I realize that rotoscoping just adds an effect over a film frame by frame. However, is Photoshop the only program that can do this? I just wanted to try my hand at this effect thing but dont want to spend a crap load of money for a program if I dont have to. But every tutorial I am finding says photoshop. Am I missing something? Am I just not getting it? You know a few years ago I didnt really like star wars, now here I am asking questions about rotoscoping to make some kind of fanfilm using the sabers I built- funny how that works isnt it[:I][]...

I had been told by a few people in th Rebel Legion that some of the others, like Print Shop Deluxe or Pro, has it or something similar. I'm sure Corel has something in it as well. Good Luck![8D]

    You need Photoshop and Premiere...

The AVI (or whatever file type you use) has to be converted to a filmstrip in Premiere. Filmstrip files can then be opened in Photoshop to do the Rotoscoping.

After you've finished, open it again in Premiere to convert the filmstrip file back to the original format.

These are the clips that I made using this process, so I know that its the right one. The quality of mine kind of suck though, because I was lazy. Rotoscoping is a huge pain in the ass and is very tedious. Also, make sure that your stunt sabers have a visible blade (brightly colored). In the first clip it was a clear blade and I couldn't quite see it in all of the frames, so I had to guess where it was and it gave me a 'wobbly' blade as a result.

    EDIT-

BTW, you can DL a trial version of Premiere that will be open for 30 days or so...

Another option might be to look for a newer style of FX program, that makes the rotoscoping easier. I've heard of these, but have never really looked into them.

Just shoot me an email if you need the 'resources' to rotoscope using Photoshop. []

Forgot to mention, that I also used Windows Movie Maker for part of the file conversions. Certain types of AVI files won't open properly in Premiere, so they have to be converted in Windows Movie Maker first.

go to the dagobah system and log onto Fanfilm.com then look under the Tutorials menu and they will tutor you to death on rotoscoping. they cover all sorts of software too.

I'll go into more detail about this once my site is up, but just for a teaser, watch this. I need to tell you I have not altered this video in any way, no FX involved (none other than the MR FX sound board inside my son's saber [])
So, who needs rotoscoping when we have Luxeons? []

And for those with wide pipes to the web - beware this is a large file - over 20Mb
