Thread: CAD question

    Default CAD question

Just a quick question for those CAD people out there.....

I have a Gcode that was created for 3D printing, but I would like to have the piece made on a CNC out of metal.

Is there a way to easily convert the code to work in a CNC?

Obviously I am a CAD novice. I have someone to do the machining I just need the proper code

I am assuming that the file that you have has an extension of .stl, if it is for 3D printing. There are some CAD packages that can take that .stl file and create a 3D model from it. From there you have to create a tool path and post process that tool path for the specific machine that it will be run on.

In short, it's best if you take that file and give it to a machine shop and see if they can do anything with it. The machine shop should have the CAD software, CAM software, and post processor to make it all work.

    Hope this helps.
