You should always use an appropriately sized resistor to match the LED to the battery. If you aren't sure about the math, there is always ledcalc.com

When you use ledcalc.com pay attention to the "Exact calculated resistance" and not the "Nearest higher rated resistor" or you may end up seriously under-driving your LED.
