Bat Wings
So, it seems that when making an LED lightsaber, everone is working with Lambertian Luxeon Stars.
Has anyone experimented with Luxeon Stars with a side emitting or batwing beam pattern? Just curious...

Hey Vadeblade,
I've used both lambertian and batwing star 1's with the LXHL-NX05 lense. I think the batwing helps the lense produce a tighter beam pattern. This means (at least in my experiments) that the blade is more even in it's light distribution. I've decided to use batwings exclusively if I can.

Thanks Madcow. Does the light emission actually look like a batwing?? Just curious why it's called that.
Also, when you build your lightsabers, are you using a colminator or a reflector to focus the light. I am going to make two youngling lightsabers and a lower wattage Lux 1 sounds safer for the young ones. But I don't want to sacrafice too much blade brightness so I would like to reproduce what you are doing.
Thanks,

Vade,
I don't know why they're called batwing... maybe in reference to the "Bat Signal" spotlight???
Most of my experiments have been with the 1 watt Lux stars. You can't get many lux 3 stars in Batwing config.
I use the Collimator lense. I just got a new cheaper version that is sold by luxeon - it boasts a 5 degree beam (as opposed to the 10 degree I've managed with the old lense). so far I have not had time to do the experiment. But I have 3 new Lux 3's to try it with.
