Thread: How do you create your own sound fonts?

Question How do you create your own sound fonts?

Anyone know how to create saber sound fonts? I know it needs to be a .wav file created on some sort of sound editing software. Does the card program already loop the sound effect for the "blade hum" or do you have to create that? Also, any tips on creating clash and swing sounds are welcome.

Never used it myself, but Audacity seems to be a popular choice for creating sound fonts

Yep, Audacity is a good package and free!

The boards will loop the hum sound but you have to prepare the file correctly in order to have a seamless loop. Swings are in theory a pitch shift or Doppler effect in the hum and clashes are generally a mix of electrical sparks, arcs, impacts, etc.

Erv has a video on YouTube explaining some of it. I believe he is using Audicity in the video, but not sure.

Excellent, thanks. Yea, I've used Audacity before. It's great, but the trial expires after a while and then you have to purchase it. I found another one on line called Power Sound Editor Free.

I've been using Audacity for years now. I've never seen a trial version that expires. If that's something that got added in recently, I'd try to dig up an older version.

Edit: I just checked their website. Audacity is still completely free. If you've got nagware or a copy that's demanding payment, that's not an official version. http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/f...city.html#free

We all have to start somewhere. The journey is all the more impressive by our humble beginnings.

Are you thinking Adobe Audition? I'm with SS. Don't remember Audacity ever charging.

Cool, must have been another software I was thinking of. I'll download Audacity today. Any recommended effects to use on it for Hum, Swing, and Clash? I've got some great sound sources on my elec. piano.

You're gonna be painting, but with sound. Without knowing more about the type of font you want to create, what you're asking is the equivalent of: What kind of brush should I use for "a painting"?

Go nuts. Try things out. Experiment. You'll be able to create some interesting effects just by playing around.

Yeah, I know, pretty broad question lol! I'm very familiar with the recording scene, so it should be fun! Probably try some flange and tremolo type effects on some cool sounds I have on my keyboard and work in some fade-in's and fade-out's for the swings!

Here are some basics. You will need to pre mix the files with the tail end of your hum file before exporting. Make sure you have a backup folder of the original unmixed sounds in case you goof.
