    Default HELP!!! Soldering Issues!!

    Hello All,

Tips on Soldering please! Things started out well, but now every time I try and solder, it just balls up and doesn't adhere! Do I have a crappy soldering iron, bad solder wire! Oh and also the positive wire pulled completely away from the battery! If I can get it re soldered, will it still work out or should I get a new one? All help is greatly appreciated! Very discouraged!

Erv' has a video or two on Youtube regarding soldering. I would try there.

If the solder is not adhering, that sounds like the iron isn't hot enough. Be sure you're heating the wires and/or the parts you want joined, and not just melting solder and trying to glob it on. Solder doesn't work like hot glue.

    Here's the tutorial I used back when I was a beginner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOdnGUMi7lQ

Okay, thanks. Also I may have made a mistake by sanding down the tip a bit thinking it to be too tarnished to take solder. Is this a bad thing? Should I be replacing the tip? Do I have a bad iron and solder? Here's what I bought:

Replace the tip. You probably destroyed the plating on the end of the iron.

Get one of those brass sponges for cleaning your tip. It's safe, doesn't damage the iron, and doesn't cool off the iron nearly as much as the wet sponges do. I use something similar to this product: http://www.amazon.com/Aoyue-Solderin.../dp/B005C789EU but any of the brass sponges will do the job. They're great for removing difficult tarnish on your tip.

Actually, just took a look and I already have that. I'll use that instead of the wet sponge. Yea just learning the whole soldering thing. I happened to read about the tip plating after I had sanded the tip ha! Buying a new tip.

Someone recommended finding old electronics and practicing by removing and replacing the components on the board. I've only soldered wire to wire and wire to speaker so far, but will definitely be doing this before attempting to solder onto a soundcard or LED.

Yea, I'll probably be practicing on some old wire I have. After I get the new tip.

    What is a good iron temp? 700 - 740F?
