    Default Drilling Rod Stock

Does anyone have tips/suggestions for drilling a center hole in 1/4" brass rod? Only tools accessible to me are drill press and standard 2" and 4" drill press vises.

EDIT: Solved. Drill 1/4" hole in piece of wood. Place wood in vise. Insert rod. Drill.

I feel like that happens to me all the time. Toil over a problem for hours, finally decide to ask for suggestions, and then instantly come up with a solution myself once I've asked.

Admittedly, I was a bit hasty and posted without searching. First image result in Google search for "drilling brass rod." DERP!!!

Thats a pretty solid solution too. I have plenty of stock so I can definitely try a few different methods. Thanks!

    I see you found a solution...great..
Have you seen a pen making vise? They are made for small dowels. You can also purchase jaws that fit in your existing drill press for vertical drilling small pieces.

No, but I'm on ebay right now looking for a cheap chuck. I may try to do the plate in aluminum rather than wood.

So I ended up getting this bad boy in a set with other things I needed and things I didn't. So I sold off the tools I didn't need and all in all it turned out to be a good deal. I figured I could do more than just drill rod with this, so I went for it. And I can always just put a drill chuck in the three jaw chuck to do longer rod if I need to.

The one thing that was a little bit of a pain was that it was hard to get the chuck adapter plate centered on the rotary table. There was no pin or stud to center it. So, I went ahead and measured the small hole in the rotary table, drill the same size hole into the back of the plate and got some drill rod of the same diameter to use as the centering pin. Works like a charm.
