How do you guys estimate wiring length?

So I successfully built my first saber (haven't posted it on here yet). I have way too much wire though as its all crammed inside the hilt. How do you guys estimate the length of wire while you're doing your electronics? I want to shorten mine as now its causing a weird short (because i took it out and put it back in).

I line up my electronics next to the assembled hilt to get an idea. I also take into consideration whether or not I need slack for a certain component to be moved or removed for repairs, access, etc.
