    Be VERY careful. You only want to remove the oxidation. You don't want to remove the metal coating on your iron's tip.

    A brass sponge is a much better solution to the wet sponge. It's hard enough to remove the oxidation, and doesn't cool down the tip nearly as much when you wipe it. They're not terribly expensive, so I highly recommend using one.

    So I've gotten the hang of this. It turns out the quality and thickness of the solder itself makes a huge difference!

    Cool. Glad you got it sorted.

    I switched to thin leaded solder after my troubles and haven't had a problem since.

    Quick question on the Brass sponge. I know they specifically sell them for the iron, but I came across one at the 99c store and read it Brass Coated sponge. Will that work just as well or not?
