Thread: Speaker Question

    Default Speaker Question

OK, This may be me being dense but I need to find a speaker to go with my backup plan. See, I have a custom saber thats almost complete (pics will come when the body is finished) and my soundboard of choice is the NBv2. That being said, if I miss out on it, I have a backup plan, based around my sheer avoidance of soldering. US's Obsidian soundboard. The only problem is, they list their soundboard as a "4 watt (x 4 ohm) amplifier compared to the 2 watt (x 4 ohm) amplifier in the original Obsidian" and my speaker needs are the 2w 20mm speaker from here because its the only one that will fit inside my saber. What do I do here?

We don't discuss that other board around here. You'd need to ask that question on their forums.

You would need to ask "them" (US). That board (and company) isn't really discussed in these parts.

Really? I see about 10 or more threads that start with Ultrasabers in their title without anyone saying anything. OK, I'll see what I can dig up over there

Most of those threads involve people who have already purchased one, and are looking to upgrade/improve/fix their saber without starting from scratch.

We also are not familiar with their soundboard as very few of us here use them....we prefer to use and discuss the products sold here. Try talking about a plecter labs board on their forum and see what happens.

At a risk of breaking some unwritten rule of etiquette, let me try to help you...

The 2W speakers sold in the TCSS and PL shops have an impedance of 8 ohms.
You can generally always drive a speaker of a higher impedance than your amplifier's (the one on the board) without fear of letting the magic smoke out. It's the lower impedance that's a no-no. There is also no fear of overdriving your speaker in any way (the current through it will be *lower* than it should be, the voltage will be proportionally higher).

That said, driving an 8 ohm speaker with a 4 ohm amp is bound to give you a much lower volume (lower current = smaller throw = lower sound pressure i.e. volume).

It's also likely to impact the sound quality somewhat, likely stripping some higher frequencies - possibly irrelevant on the 2W bass speaker (if you're using that one) as it's not exactly good in that department anyways.

    So, to summarize:
Yes, you can use the speaker.
    It will be quieter.
Sound quality might be slightly worse.
