Default How do hilts hold up to direct impact?

    Hi All,

First, I'm so thankful to have found such a strong community resource for saber building.

I'm building escrima sticks to duel with (as seen below) and am concerned about how well a electronics filled hilt might hold up to impacts from other sticks. Ultimately, I'd like the mini-sized hilts on both ends to be the same weight and form, only with one of them containing all of the electronics.

Makoto's nunchakus are close to what I'm after, but mine will be sized differently.

If anybody has done impact tests, can speak to staff, nunchaku or escrima stick construction, or knows where to look, please touch base!

    Thank you

    First, welcome to the Forums.

Typically, most lightsabers are built as that, lightsabers, not as other items. As far as how well a hilt with electronics will hold up, it all depends on how well you plan and build it. I've "fought" with hilts I've build, and they held up fine. However, if all you are going to be doing is just constantly beating on these, putting all kinds of electronics inside might not be the greatest of ideas. Your milage may vary.

    Yeah, I figured as much.

I guess what I'm after are any suggestions on how to go about anchoring everything extra tight. IE: Saudering methods, taping methods, fixtures or parts that you've found especially durable.

Also, I've been searching the store for blade holders that look lake Makato's in the following image, but couldn't find anything with a diameter smaller than 1". (I'm presuming that the portion of the holder that enters the PC on Makato's chucks is lass than 1" in diameter) Am I just looking at it wrong?

    Thanks again

Those look like 1" blades, but the chain-linked end caps are not blade holders. You could try to machine yourself end caps like those from 1" aluminum.

You will find that most of the parts here were designed with durability in mind.
You might want to look at MHS v2 size parts. They are smaller, and may be best suited for what you are aiming for.

Thanks, Madcow. That's what I've been looking at. I guess my question is that I don't see any parts on the site that are less than 1" in diameter in the MHS 2 pages. I don't understand how you'd go about attaching a sturdy pommel without anchoring in from within the hollow blade (as seen on Makoto's chucks).

**Edit** I think I have a basic understanding - Add a Pommell like this one

to a spacer like this one.

Screw the PC blade to some threaded holes in the spacer, affix the LED on top of said spacer, and you have this:

    Nope.
Those spacers are for chassis - the things are thinner than a pencil. (next video will show this)

You will not find parts here that are intended to fit INSIDE a 1" polycarbonate blade. Rather, the style of these parts are for lightsabers where you slide the polycarb blade into the hilt. As such, all the parts will have a greater diameter than the blade. Our advice will direct you to this style of build. If you are really intent on getting parts that will fit into a polycarb blade, you will probably have to get your own machined somewhere.
