Lee, Rosco, and Apollo filters... some new products.

Hey all, was at my local stage and film lighting business, and they had a whole slew of products that could be beneficial for saber blades... for example, Lee and Rosco now make colored gel filter tubes that could be used inside polyc tubes, between the tube wall and the diffusion filters... or maybe even used as diffusion filters themselves. Not sure if this is new, or just new to me. If anyone has tried this, I would be curious to know how it turned out. These also a ton of different diffusion films now from light to heavy diffusion... all sorts of stuff. Thanks!

So I found some great color through various Lee Filters... took lots of experimentation... all of these are Lee filters on a white tri cree running all three die, but only on trust fire 14500s. (i didn't set up these blades, they are from another company, but i'm just using them to test the filters. They're running a buckpuck and I think that's limiting the current on the LEDs a bit too much... but...

A good purple/magenta

A good Amber

Cyan, on the green side

Cyan, on the blue side

And a good silver

Pictures look better than in person, but they good in person as well. Only slight loss of brightness in each of these, which is why they came out great.

So.. to be clear.. these are the filters? (which have been around for years and years)... or are these the 'tubes' you had mentioned above?

How long are these 'tubes'? custom lengths? only available in one size? (links?)

No, these are just single Lee filters. I only posted them because I wasn't able to find any posts on them with the tri cree white LEDs if anyone was interested.

I saw this thread yesterday and for the sake of argument started a google search for "colored gel filter tubes " and surprisingly found several websites that sell these and they can be purchased individually and in an unbelievable assortment of colors too. One website I found https://www.newlighting.com/7549/new...sleeve-t5-x-48 has these for sell and it appears through some reading I did that a T5 size would work possibly for our applications. Obviously some actually testing would need to be done but it appears based of the specs that the T5 size tube is 'possibly' doable. Specs are as follows (near as I could tell) OD 0.740" ID 0.680" and wall thickness is 0.040".

Now based off of those specs you would need either a 1" thick walled blade or a 7/8" thin walled blade. The thickness of these "filter tubes" I would wager a guess is pretty comparable to 6' or 8' feet of cellophane wrap????

But there is always the loss in brightness to consider as well. I would definitely want to run a XPE2 Tri-Cree WWW on a CF7.5 with all three white dies wired in parallel and the color profile #1 set to 3000, 0, 0. That way all three die would be maxed out individually. I think this would give you the best results.

It's worth trying for anyone that's willing to do a little leg work.

Thanks for the reply. Again, I wasn't sure if those tubes were just new to me, or a new thing all together. The one thing I do notice about the Lee and rosco filters is that they don't rob too much brightness (obviously depending on the color choosen) but for most colors, they do a good job.

What are the 2 cyans you used exactly? When my saber comes in might try them out or both of them if they make a nice color together. Or how can I make a nice bluer shade of cyan while mixing filters? I've done that before on "another" saber before so. Though I found me a cool green to use for now until I can get me another book. Wondering what the moonlight blue and some other shade of cyan would look like
