Thread: Removing paint from parts?

    Default Removing paint from parts?

So this is a little different than the average painting question...

I painted my son's Iron Man saber and it was glorious. Until he got a hold of it. Now I have this once-beautiful saber looking rather, shall we say, weathered.

I'd like to strip the paint from the parts and use my new powder-coating gun to put on an even better metallic red. Any ideas on the best way to get the paint off without messing up the aluminum surface too bad? I painted using the tutorial in this forum: lightly sanded, primed and baked, painted and baked, using Krylon sprays.

    Thanks all!

Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get yourself some aircraft paint stripper, some latex gloves, and a pack of 'throw away' paint brushes.

Get home, put on your latex gloves and shake the stripper can. Brush liberally on the parts. You should actually see the paint start to bubble up in a few seconds. After a few minutes, take an old rag and wipe off the 'gook'. If there is any paint left, repeat process. When you're finished, clean with lacquer thinner, dry and re-paint.

Fender didn't mention it, but you should definitely dismantle the saber completely and remove any electronics first.
We all have to start somewhere. The journey is all the more impressive by our humble beginnings.

The aircraft stripper works great. I've even used it to strip off powdercoat. You'll be amazed how great this stuff works.
