Thread: Puck with 2 leds

    Default Puck with 2 leds

My friend wants a simple stunt staff with very little cost. He also wants only one switch to fire both leds at the same time. He already had two white, lux III leds and I had an extra 1000ma puck laying around. So my question is, do I have to run the leds in series to get the full 1000ma or can I split it at the puck and run it parallel? I'll be using a 7.2v nimh pack. The store description said to run 8v to power two leds off of one puck, but I think I can get away with a little under. Any help is appreciated.

Run the LEDs in series if you want them driven at 1000mA each. If you wire them in parallel, the current will be split and each LED will only get 500mA.

IIRC, the Lux III white is 3.9v, 1000mA. They should still light up, but they may be a bit starved for power. The Rebel whites are only 3.1v @ 1000mA, and would run just fine with that battery pack. I'd go ahead and give it a shot with the parts you have, it may work well enough for your friend.

The other option is to run the two LEDs in parallel, but use resistors instead of your buckpuck. You shouldn't run into any power issues if you go that route.
We all have to start somewhere. The journey is all the more impressive by our humble beginnings.

Thanks. I may try the resistors next.
