As an entry level helmet, it's better than it's rebel counterpart. You still need to make modifications such as lenses, fixing the "ears" and getting a suspension set up, like a hard had liner so it stays put on your head. As opposed to dropping ~$250 for a custom, it's a good place to start from.

is it like those crappy thin plastc halloween masks or a good quality thick plastic?

Mine's vinyl, so it's flexible. What a lot of people do is add wood and fiberglass stiffeners. Still, it's pretty thick

My first TIE helmet was a Rubies. Now I have a Don Post Classic Action but the Rubies can be very
respectable alternative, providing you are willing to put in a little bit of effort.

Here's what I did to mine:

Heated & re-shaped the ears (done with a hairdryer)
Re-inforced the inside of the ears with 1/2" plywood
    Cut out hose holes
    Removed the bubble lenses
    Enlarged the eye holes
Fiberglassed the whole of the inside (once I was happy with the shape)
Made & fitted flat, green lenses
    Fitted a hard-hat liner
Rubbed down the outside until smooth, removed 'Rubies' text
Primed in grey and shot in BMW Cosmos Black metallic paint
    Applied new Imperial 'cog' decals
Added some metal details (ear greeblies, bolt heads etc)
Shot the whole thing in clear lacquer

It sounds like a lot of work but it really isn't. The end result is stunning
and although the Rubies is a good deal smaller than, say, a DP CA,
this is still an awesome helmet.
