Default Your drill press vise recommendations

    Hey guys,
I have a benchtop drill press (harbor freight) and am wanting to get a vise for it.

I am wondering whether a 3.5" cross slide vise would be good to get, or just a regular one. I don't know if the cross slide would be overkill or not, just wanting some experienced feedback.

    Thanks,
    CC

    Get the cross slide.
It makes lining things up SO MUCH easier. I got a regular one first 'cause that's all Home Depot had and it was a PITA.

    I concur.

I do not own a drill press, but at a former job, I used one extensively.

We had this type of vice. Very quick and easy to use, especially when you're drilling a lot of holes:

With a cross-slide, I think he means this type of vice, J-Lo. Once clamped, the stock can be positioned mechanically with the little hand wheels. I picked one up off craigslist, but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. Too much turkey (and toddler time). Looks promising, though.

Ok, cross slide it is. Hopefully the 3.5" will fit. All the others I've tried have been to big.

    I have same drill press...

I think we went over this before too (told you to carefully find a vise that fits/works) =)

I got the 4 & 5" milling/machine vise from HF..and with the default drill press/table/base set-up... they just dont really work.

maybe the 3.5 yield a smaller footprint? but I thought it was for jaw opening? (but hell if I know!) LOL

the problem is the DEPTH with the base taking up room that your table needs to be lower... and the throat which doesnt allow full movement and hard alignment.

these are nice to get for round bar:

Im actually might be picking up one of these, so I have no problems.. and can use a bigger vise..

    You have this DP? http://www.amazon.com/Speed-Bench-To.../dp/B000FO2X6U

I did talk a little bit about this to some guys on the Soutbox a while ago...

I have tried and returned many vises, the base is always to big. SO hopefully the 3.5" vise is small enough.

That is neat, I may have to get one of those as well.

My problem with DP that big is I have no room, I am confined to a workbech, so it has to fit on it...

    oh..not that drill press..

thought you said HarborFreight one.. (which is the one I have...but I suppose that have several bench top models)

Yeah I dont room really either.. but I figured in between my two benches it will have to fit if I want to ever use my DP closer to its potential.

(Next I just need to figure out ow to mount my tiny rotary table into the vise! lol)

This drill press is the perfect size for jewelry making. The motor isn't too powerful, which can sometimes cause the drill to stop when going through harder materials. But for my purposes, it isn't an issue 99% of the time. Recommended!
