While many people agree that The Empire Strikes Back was the best movie of the Original Trilogy, you fell into the trap that so many others do by using the most misquoted line in the movie, if not the entire trilogy.

Vader never said, "Luke, I am your father". What he
really said was, "No, I am your father."

The whole part of that goes like this:

    • Darth Vader: If you only knew the power of the Dark Side. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.
    • Luke Skywalker: He told me enough! He told me you killed him!
    • Darth Vader: No. I am your father.
    • Luke Skywalker: No... that's not true! That's impossible!
    • Darth Vader: Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
    • Luke Skywalker: NOOOOOOOOO! NOOOOOOOO!
In order to see the Light,
you must sometimes risk the Dark.

Mea Culpa, JLo. The reason I suspect it is oft "misquoted" is because it is widely considered one of the most famous lines in cinematic history so is frequently shortened to a 'one-liner' not an entire dialogue passage in order to fit that category...in which case for clarity it becomes necessary to indicate it is addressed to Luke ["I am your father" bereft of context as to the recipient has no dramatic gravitas] so from a certain point of view...

    But you are correct.

To quote a famous movie line previously quoted in this thread.

If you really want to appreciate him, and his character building genius, go listen to the commentary on Empire. He explains so much that isn't obvious, I know I look at Empire from a whole new perspective after he explained it all to me

Which of the many versions of the OT is that commentary on? I never bought the very (so far ) latest version.

    On tape? O.o

J-Lo, I have the trilogy box set that was released 2005 IIRC, around about the time I got ROTS on DVD too.
