Default Why do most use Lux 3 when 5 is available?

Please don't flame me but I was just wondering why there isn't like more powerful packages and why these aren't as popular as the 3 watt. I know it's more expensive but so is the saber right? Also, how come must who actually do carry these only have like green or blue? Again, I am all new to this so please be patient with me.

Being new doesn't forgive you from being Unintelligible. If you want an answer fast, you must make your question so that everyone knows what you mean. I didn't understand your first question, and to your last: Those are the colors Tim has (He's out of some).

Answering the questionin the Topic title, Corbin's driver and MR saber soundboards won't work (see: Fry) with the voltage required to power a Luxeon V

You'll find that the 5 LEDs generate alot of heat, too much for some saber designs. Plus they require a higher voltage that makes it challenging to incorporate sound. The 3w LED's are more compatible with everything else.

Exactly as stated above, but maybe I can shed some light...

First to an easier thing to explain, the green/blue issue. There is no red/yellow 5W because there is no need. The 3W red/yellows can be driven harder and actually out perform the the 5W's when driven to the max. Most don't do that but think about this: a Red 3W driven at 1450ma is 190 lumens, and the Green 5W at 700ma is 160 lumens. This is all based on the fundamentally different diodes each color uses (there is a nice video on this at the lumileds site).

Why the 5W isn't used... high voltage, heatsinking, and the saber incompatibility arising from the previous two. The high voltage of a fully driven (or even minimally for that matter) 5W will fry soundboards (at least the normal ones like Hasbros and MR). The heatsinking is tremendous. You NEED an extension or ribbed section on the MHS stuff, and the standard blade holder is not enough for sink tubes either.

If you can live without sound and a slightly longer saber then a 5W might be for you. There is also a 20W LED out there... wanna try it?[] I've been contemplating higher wattages and I may go for it sometime with a fan (the mouser catalog got me thinking[]), but until then wanting sound is holding me back.

Thank you all very much, this has been a big help on my search for my first lightsaber. Again, I really do appreciate everyone's help and tolerence of my questions.
