Thread: Proper drillbit size for drilling hole for 8-32 thumb screw?

  1. #1

Cool Proper drillbit size for drilling hole for 8-32 thumb screw?

I feel so dumb for asking this (and I did search and got nothing pertinent back), I have a 8-32 x 3/8" Red Acetal thumb screw from the store, and, duh, nominally one would use say the 8-32 drill bit to drill a hole in the holder and let loose the thumb screw fury that is, but I'll be darned if my drillbit set doesn't have an 8-32 size bit...so..for the sake of drilling the proper size hole...what size would I really want to use to ensure a proper fit?

You need a #29 drill bit for an 8-32 screw. This is a larger diameter than a 1/8".

    # 29 (.136) is the proper size.

It's the fourth stickied topic down in the same section you posted your original question. It has a lot of tap and drill sizes listed that are common to this hobby.
