I used 400 as I read about some one else using it...and it just makes you blades outer edge a little more defused looking.. your roll of cellophane or what ever you use isnt so visible, it blends into it.
the blade in my pics below is sanded. It gave it a pearl kind of effect.

It makes the blade look "fuller", sort of like the Ultraedge, though not as dramatic. It also doesn't make your blade look like an Easter egg like the ultraedge seems to do.

Sanding the outside of a blade can bring the light to the outer edges of the blade, so that it has less of a "light inside a tube" look.
If you sand around the circumference, it can also give you a slight "core" effect, like the blade film from the Store does.
If you duel against other polycarbonate blades it will make smooth spots on it, so you will need to resand your blade periodically.

I just built my first 30" blade..now I need some one to duel!! ive been running around the streets with my light saber but so far no ones taken me up on the challenge!

As for the topic at hand. I have found that using 120 grit, 220, then 400 grit SP makes the process of sanding easier if done by hand. I think it looks pretty good. My blades have diffuser in them, for now. I do want to see how a sanded blade (that I have done) looks with out diffuser. I'm guessing not as good.
Though I have not tried it I think that someone could use the same sand paper employing the same method in sanding the chrome off of sink tube.

I've done it, but I do not enjoy doing that completely by hand.
If you look around the forums, people have come up with quicker ways to do that.

The cool thing about sanding the blade is it removes the "Light in tube" look. That's the best way I can explain it.
I use 400 grit sandpaper going from top to bottom. I takes maybe 10 minutes but the results are awesome!
