Thread: battery life and duelling with EL vs LED?

Default battery life and duelling with EL vs LED?

I have a few questions that you guys might be able to help with-
First of all, how long will 4 AAA batteries last powering a luxeon LED saber? Can I keep the saber lit continuously for an hour or so without killing the batteries or overheating the thing?

Also, the polycarb tubing on an LED saber is 1" in diameter, where an EL saber is 3/4". Is it safe to duel when one person has an LED saber and the other has an EL?

You can get an hour or so with FRESH batteries but after about 15 minutes or so there is a little dimming, you don't really notice it unless you load up fresh stuff again. but it still looks great so it is not a big deal.

I have used my 1" LED against friends and my kids using 3/4" ELs and there has been NO problems at all. The only thing that has ever happened is that the boy got the tip of my blade and sent that 1" tip flying and I mean several yards a neighbor or two flying. we never did find the dang tip had to install a new one.

Be careful with rechargeables. I'm not sure if the sabers would be affected, but if you use ordinary rechargeable batteries, they can deliver a higher current (or something) that can mess things up if they're in the wrong item. Probably would only affect any sound boards, if it affects anything, but just be aware of it.

I believe you mean the newer Oxy-whavevers, and even then it's only certain brands. READ THE LABELS, one (Panasonic maybe?) said do not use in objects with lights... hence fries sabers. It provides a huge boost on start up that fries them nicely.

Rechargeables are fine... just remember they are 1.2V not 1.5V. So you need 5 NiMH AA's to equal 4 normal Alkaline AA's. The amperage is great though because of the push for good digital camera batteries.

I was in Radio Shack today and found these ridiculously hoss super-AA's, they ran like double the voltage at something like 2.x Ah, but they were 13 bucks apiece. And not rechargeable. Great if you have some ridiculously compact minisaber project. And then there's the size N or L or whatever the hell they are, you use them in digital cameras. They output like a AA, but are like half the length. Seems to me they'd be a good choice if you can afford the batteries and just HAVE TO have a skinny handle.
