I think a cool effect would be to actually heat up a chrome sink tube so that it begins to discolor and then paint and weather it.

This is probably a smart idea as well, make sure your light is still in working order by testing it without the board to eliminate the possibility of that being the issue.

If you wanted to use LED's you could get maybe two or three and get a side emitting lens, like this. It should diffuse the light sideways mostly but you will get some straightforward lighting as well.

I don't know why but Dremel has always had great customer service. I'm not complaining of course, you just don't often find it nowadays.
