You were correct. Charged it up and the crackling went away. I will consider different battery options in the future if I build another saber. Thanks for the info!

I was thinking that might be the case. Man, I was hoping to get more than an hour of run time. Many troops I go are 6-8 hours. I will recharge tonight and see what I get.
Thanks!
So, after all the other snags I have had, I have hit another.
I wired up the saber entirely and fired it up. Everything works amazingly well. Changed colors, switched fonts, blaster blocks,...
So, the problem has been solved. It was one of 3 things.
Those 3 changes were:
Increased the iron temp to 3.5ish
Used a new screwdriver chisel tip instead of the conical ordered from Amazon...
I don't have a station that tells me the temp. I have a Weller WLC100 and I had it set on 3. Any idea how hot that is? I think I will try bumping it to 4 once I get the new tip I ordered in the mail.
Thanks for the feedback. I was concerned about putting too much heat. I will try and turn the heat up a bit and pull some of that solder off. I think I bridged those two terminals on the back so I...
So...
I have soldered many times before on other projects but this was the first time on a small PCB. I watched a bunch of videos, including Shameem's Prizm video.
Last night I tried to pre-tin...
I just double checked the bottle I used and it is definitely alcohol. I have no clue what happened. Seems like alcohol should have been fine.
I just took a Q-tip, wet it with alcohol and rubbed it...
Thanks for all of the great replies, everyone!
Just a quick follow up...
After doing some further research, it turns out most of my troubles were due to a heavily oxidized soldering iron tip. I...
So, I just made my first attempt at soldering my Tri Cree LED. Man, getting the heat to soak into the pads was really tough. I think I may need a new soldering tip as I couldn't get it to pre-tin and...
I was thinking about making the angled cuts on my compound miter saw with a metal blade so thanks for the heads up on the safety suggestion. I want my saber to be able to be double handed so a bit of...
I can appreciate your process. It's similar to the great European marble sculptors of the renaissance! I will sit tight and keep watching that thread but in the meantime I will keep brainstorming...
Oh I believe you. I am watching the new build and I can see how you got the pommel insert on the new hilt. I just think the pommel is a bit too bulky for my tastes with that extra layer of shroud on...
The more I look at this build the more I fall in love with it. I totally get your sentiment about building it yourself. My droid really gives me a lot of pride when I take him out to cons because I...
Nice to see the progress here. I have been strongly considering a MHS build based on your original builld, but I am really trying to think up a way to get a detachable pommel so I can add in the...
I look forward to seeing this build. It sounds like its going to be EPIC.
Based on what I have seen using the saber builder tool and looking for blank aluminum stock online, I think I will just...
This is an amazing build. I am going to source these parts and see what the cost comes out to. I want make one similar to this with a Prizm board.
Is there a 3D printed chassis for this style of...
Thanks for the reply! I have seen your Nihilus saber. It's really sweet. I will watch that video you posted as well!
I think I am in love with the Holocron design. Shameem is def an amazing...
Hello all. I have been wanting to start on a Darth Nihilus 501st costume and I figured why not start with the saber?
I am not new to prop making or electronics, due to my 501st membership and...
