I have used current sense resistors for my builds without any issue. As long as they meet the requirements of your build i.e. power rating, size, resistance.

Wiring is likely going to give you the most trouble with a cramfu design. Wires rarely follow where you want as they tend to "spring".

Flat across the hole is best overall. Flat offers many advantages over putting wire through the hole.

This is possible, just use the appropriate sized resistors for your LEDs to ensure you don't draw more than the allowed current for the LEDs and the soundboard.
