The Tri-Cree LEDs seem to be my flavor of choice right now and I am currently using a .5 ohm 3 watt resister on a 3.7 3400mah battery for the three LEDs and it seems to work just fine. I read about the buckpucks but are they really worth it?

Once you get a multi-die LED setup like a Tri-Cree, you need a 'puck for each die. This gets expensive, both in terms of $$$ and in space inside your hilt. Buckpucks take up a LOT more room than resistors.
The 5v minimum requirement to power a buckpuck prevents you from using it with the lower range sound boards (and the higher end boards don't need it), so it's only ever used in builds without sound.

for the cost of 3 buck pucks (assuming you are not using a sound board) you are most of the cost toward something like the Pico Crumble which can either be muted or if you really don't want sound you can just not attach a speaker. It's power management means that it doesn't really need a kill key and it basically just works.
