I like that the PC has a LED driver on board, but am reading that a color extended is needed for better color mixing.
This will be my first saber build and would like to change LED colors on the fly, but do I need to the color extender for that?

It is not absolutely necessary to use the color extender for color mixing when using the petit crouton. There is always the option of pseudo color mixing by using the on board power extenders, and a diagram for that can be found on page 29 of the PC manual.
That being said, you will get more accurate color mixing if you use the color extender.
