You can get your EL blades to be brighter by increasing the voltage that you put into the inverter. Bump it up from 9V to 12V.
You'd need to use this battery holder, and I don't know how long it is, or whether it'll fit into a single hilt section. I'm thinking it probably won't, since the inverter will have to sit below the switch.

Hey guys, If the guy wants to build an EL saber, I say he should. For those of you who have not built one, you should as well! If he uses the 4kHz inverter from the store and 18V, he will have a nice bright saber and get exactly what he wants. The best part for him is that if he decides it is not bright enough and he wants to convert to LED later, then he has not wasted anything other than the $ on the inverter and the blade.:mrgreen:

Notice that I was not trying to talk him out of it. I merely asked why he wanted to do an EL rather than an LED saber.
