Polished the MHS
Well, I think I'm done polishing this hilt. Though the MHS is fairly shiney as is, I wanted a brighter luster. Luckily the aluminum on the MHS carries only minor blemishes (great machine work Styrder!), so I was able to skip right to the 2000 grit sandpaper combined with plenty of metal polish. I still might put some O-rings in the grooved area, but here's my 5w Green as it looks now. [:)]

I need a drooling emoticon.
That's really cool!
-
Thanks! I got the hilt to a good shine with about an hour invested and just using the metal polish. Earlier today I found some 2000 grit sandpaper in the garage and thought "why not?" Lol. That was about 2 hours ago. Doesn't take too long, again, thanks to the great machine work done by Tim. I polished the Luke FX awhile back, and that bad boy took forever thanks to all the surface imperfections - and I'm still not 100% satisfied with it either.
Here's the MR polished Luke:

Mmm... I'm going to have to try that. I didn't know they went to 2000 grit (I've only been up to 800). I'm assuming I'd need to stick my head in an autoparts store, any recommendations for the polish like what exactly you used?

I've gotten 2000 grit in the auto section of my local Super Wal-Mart.
-
Yup, I get the 2000 at the local auto part store. 1500 grit also works alright, but to get the best finish 2000 is the ticket. As for the polish, I personally use Simichrome Polish, but the easy to find Blue Magic Metal Polish works decent also.

I hope you don't mind my asking (for clarification), but I've never done anything like this before. Did you use the 2000 grit first, and then rub on metal poliish with a cloth after? Or do you put the polish on the sand paper and go from there? Or, do you rub on the polish, and then use the sand paper?

http://www.members.shaw.ca/Jedi.Rang...Banner_4.1.jpg
http://www.members.shaw.ca/Jedi.Ranger/

-
1.) Tape off the areas you don't want to polish.
2.) Sand the surfaces you wish to polish evenly. *For this project I held the sand paper in one hand, and rotated the hilt on the paper with the other.
3.) Apply the polish to a paper towel or soft rag and apply to the sanded areas. Don't be afraid to be generous since excess polish can be easily buffed/wiped off.
4.) Buff the polished areas until your content with the results. Repeat step 2-4 if there are any areas with unwanted scratches.

Thanks alot! I can't wait to try this! This is actually perfect timing, since I am in the process of building 2 new hilts, for myself.

I used to use 3000 grit paper (foam) when I worked in the body shop.
It's more like 1/16" faom with a thin coat of very fine abrasive material on it.
Works Awsome for buffing cars!

If the metal has imperfections use 600grit then move to 1000 then 1500 then 2000. If you want to go farther i use 2500 and 3000trizact. The smoother the metal the easier the final polish will be. The folks at Eastwood sell some kits for doing it all. Here's a link to their metal polishing area:
http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?i...ORY&itemID=432
Tim's machining only requires 1000grit since his MHS hilts have light machine marks and the MR is a fast production cut and it is not as precise of a job as our man does!!!

The only problem with the 3000 Trizac is it coast 75 dollars for 15 to 20 pieces. But it is the stuff. I sand and polish my bowling equipment useing the same stuff

that looks awesome, todd! me want!
when i used to do auto detailing i'd use this type of clay block to make the metal surfaces of cars as smooth as a baby's butt. wonder if that'd help on machined metal too?

I have used Mother's aluminum polish on aluminum wheels before and I have turned machined wheels into to polished wheels with the polish and a buffing wheel. I wonder how well it would work on the MHS parts[?]

You know what I think? I think he didn't really polish the hilt, and instead got it chrome plated. Then, he decided to make it seem like he put the work in to actually polish it, in order to earn praise. [;)]

Looks polished to me - I've got a few of mine to look almost that nice. And I don't think you can chrome plate aluminum, but firebird is the master of that domain.

Claying only removes particles (that washing doesn't remove) from the paint surface, it doesn't actually polish it.
FYI It's recommended that you Clay the finish of your vehicle once a year to keep it at it's best shine.

Yes you can Chrome Aluminum. You just have to Zincate it first.
Some Harley Davidson parts are aluminum and have some of the highest quality Chrome on the market today.

On the bottom of this thread (http://thecustomsabershop.com/sabers...?TOPIC_ID=1047), I posted a pic of the hilt with only metal polish applied. The emitter & ribbed section really benefit from a good sanding, but the lower "hilt" pieces are already very smooth. With just metal polish alone I was able to get the lower half very shiney. [;)]

Where did you get the Simicrome? I know you can get it over the net but I was wondering if you got it somewhere local, just hate to spend 5-10 bucks on shipping for a $3 tube of metal polish. lol

You can also use Mothers Mag Polish... Available at Walmart.

I polished the emitter and pommel, but not the ribs. It's mot an MHS, it's a stunt (beating stick) I had milled out, but you could easily make a similar one via the MHS.

Now I'm gonna piss off a lotta people with this, but I am planning on painting my Luke #5 satin black. The front and rear lips will remain unpainted, but the main front section and the end section will be black. The middle section will be copper. The main section will be either polished aluminum or a chrome sink tube over the MHS. That will also be black after being machined into a grip section by Tim. The main section will have a cutout to show the grip ala Obi-wan EP1. I'm sure you get the idea with this pic:

I was just kidding. I was thinking to myself, these guys are polishing the crap out of these things and it looks pretty cool, and here I am about to paint it. It just struck me as funny. I guess I used the wrong phraseology. I should have said, "It's gonna sound pretty funny, but I'm going to paint it."
