Update: Finished the saber today, wired the r.i.c.e. into the battery negative, and it works like a charm. Thought you ought to know.

That's correct, but only if both ports are metal and contact the hilt, like, in my case, both are mounted in box 14. If you found some way to isolate either port in a plastic/non-conductive housing so it didn't make contact, then you wouldn't have to worry about it supposedly.
