I am thinking on getting a luxeon 5 watt. What is the brightest color? I noticed that Ultra has a silver colored blade option on his site. Also, need a few tips on the battery type. 9Vs seem to die fast. Not sure about AA and AAA. Any tips? Is it possible to combine Corbins blade film with Tims diffuser? I remember someone doing something similar... or was that with the polyproprolene(sp?). Does anyone know whether or not a 5 Watt can compete with the Hyperdyne blade I have?

I need heatsinking tips as well. [:)]

Get a MHS hilt with an extension piece, use a 6 AA holder, and pick whatever color you like 'cause your eyes play a bigger factor in what is the brightest then any silly ratings.

I think so far your the only one here that has one of them hyper blades so when ya get yer 5W Luxeon saber you can tell us[;)]

Ultra's silver is the white Lux5 and you can get the discs for a buck in the store.

EDIT-the MHS w/ ext will be plenty to heatsink the LED and if your really feeling frisky you can use the AA rechargeables which have been discussed before the new ones are better then the crap from a few years ago.

James, did you mean the 4AAA battery holder? I don't think the 4AA fits in the hilt section.

Nope, I ment 6 AA. It has only two rows of three and it works like butter. If you use a 4 AAA on a 5 watter your runnin short. Although a 4 an a 2 AAA together would work well. You really want to get your 9 volts so you can get your maximum current to that board.

Forgive me Tim for I have used a battery holder from some of my old truck stock[B)]

My hilt is being machined by Randomsabers. Its a LED ready saber thats probrably going to come sometime in september. long wait I know. But its worth it. A massive 14.5" saber should be good... What resistor should I use if any at all?

Very nice. You can use the resistor calculators which are plastered all over the place. When in doubt just use the 5w that Tim has in the store.

Couldn't I just use the 4AA Sanyo rechargables provided here at TCCS? Will the 4AA holder work and fit into a 1.5" hilt? Than wire something to power the sound? Might need to check Radioshack for the charger, but the nearest Radioshack is like 2 blocks away from my house.

You will not have enough mojo with only 6 volts so using the recharge pack while not a bad idea, won't give you the best fire in your blade.

Just checked my local Radioshack. Couldn't find 6AA battery holders. The employee just stared at me like I was crazy or something... He recommended Li - ion batteries. However I don't know how to use those.

I think I remember Radioshack having a 6AA holder... I'm not suprised the employee gave you the "[?]" look, lol. Li-ion would mean you'd need to mess with rechargables.

Unfourtunatly, unless you get an "old timer" (take no offense please) the employees can tell you about TV's and cell phone plans but know jack $#!^ about CB radios and what is in those mysterious parts drawers.

I only go to my Radio Shanty first thing in the morning when the manager first opens up, good fella that actually knows the difference between a diode and a resistor[;)]

As far as a 6AA holder goes, have no fear cause Underdog is here...

I've been running my 5w Green on a 6v setup.. it does light up bright and all, but I have no 3w to compare against in this format. I just ordered a few of those 6 AA holders and I'm thinking of running it with some NiMH 1.2v rechargeables to make 7.2v. We'll see how much better it looks with another volt added. [:D]

You'll need to resistor it at that point. 7.2V is above the forward voltage and 6V is not.

^ But if the max forward voltage is 8.31, wouldn't 7.2v be okay?

A little not well know fact is that a rechargable battery when fully charged will be higher than what it is rated at. Motorola uses L-ion batteries for some of their portable radios and they have 6 cells at 1.2 volts each for a total of 7.2 volts but when fully charged you will typically see a voltage of about 8.4 volts which could exceed your forward voltage so it would be best to use a resister.

i have a question about my 5 watt, i am running it on a 9v (brand new battery) with a 2.2 ohm 5w resistor and it doesn't seem very bright, i am pretty sure my red lux 3 is brighter. any idea what might be wrong?

Like Do-Clo said fully charged they always are higher then the rated voltage.

Also, a resistor helps "smooth" it out although you don't have a lot of surges with batteries.

Check the voltage on the 9v. I'm now using a NiHM 9v and it registers 9.3v on a full charge. Unfortunately I can only fit one 9v in my hilt right now, and because my 9v is only 170mah it doesn't last too long.. but for about 5 minutes the green or royal blue 5w luxeon is extremely bright! I intend on picking up a 250mah or more 9v soon, so hopefully that will help duration until I figure something else out. *I use a 2.7ohm 5w resistor btw.

I was mostly refering to min forward voltages, but yes.
