View Full Version : Varying lightsaber "voices"

Something I've noticed from long, long hours of watching Star Wars is that there are at least three distinct "voices" of a lightsaber, most noticable when they ignite. There's the "old school" sound, the "sith hiss" sound, and the "new snarl." I know this isn't terribly helpful in describing them, so I'll associate voices with sabers:
Old school: Luke ANH, Anakin ROTS
Sith Hiss: Darth Sidious ROTS, Darth Tyranus ROTS.
New Snarl: Luke ROTJ

Does anyone else notice this, and if so, does the "voice" of your saber matter to you?

is this with regard to the sounds from the movies or from the MR sound boards?

I believe he's talking about the movies.

I personaly like Luke's saber from ROTJ. I think it has a very "Clean" sounding ignition.

I agree with ya Firebird, Lukes from ROTJ is my favorite by far. Clean, but also somewhat agressive. Sounds like the blade is punching itself out of the hilt.

Update: I notice in Return of the Jedi that Luke's saber has at least two sound sets all it's own.
From the beginning of the movie up until it is confiscated by Darth Vader before being brought to the Emperor, it has one set of sounds. During the duel with Vader, it changes to a second set of sounds. Most peculiar.

You guys have me intrigued. I'm going to have to pop in ROTJ this weekend and study the sounds. As far as the MRs go, Mace Windu's has a pretty nice growl.

Yeah, Countdown, the Sith sabers all seem to be using the same sound set, almost a hissing, gas-escaping kind of sound. Very sibilant, very serpentine, and more than a little evil. I need to get back on Ep. 3 and check out Mace's saber voice. Now that I've noticed it, I'm really digging the second set of Luke's saber in ROTJ.

I too liked the changes in the sounds over time and types of sabers.

I agree that the Mace FX has a great "bark" to it that I haven't heard in the others.

I like Luke's second sound set and I think Mace Windu's saber's "bark" is because of his fighting style. The style he uses is the vapid (I guess I spelled it right) which is as close to the dark side as a Jedi can get without actually being a sith. [:)]

Dark Siders beware my golden blades.

Vaapad was a form that called on the Jedi using it to tap into his darker emotions, so yeah, you do run the risk of falling to the Dark Side using it. Mace was the only Jedi ever to successfully control his emotions and fully master the form. Which makes sense, since he is a BMFJ. (Bad Mother Frolicking {right...} Jedi)

I really like the way the Mace board sounds, it has 4 different clash sounds, for one thing. I picked one up from Corbin last month.

The problems are that it runs on 9 volts and uses a DPDT switch (Corbin said you'd need a DPTT switch to run everything with his driver board). So I'm thinking that I'll install a seperate switch and just run the sound board on it's own and then I can use a 9V battery instead of 6AAAs, cuz I won't have to worry about getting enough amperage for the LED. And if I don't want sound for whatever reason, I don't have to turn on the board.

In order to see the Light, you must sometimes risk the Dark.

Something else I've wondered. What do the rest of the jedi council's sabers sound like when ignited? Which of the saber sounds named by Adderall would fit their sabers? Like Yaddle, I always wondered since she was the same species as Yoda and may have practiced the same combat style as Yoda what would her saber sound like, or any of the rest of the council's for that matter.

Inasmuch as we can get a "canon" answer for that, Gold, I suggest paying close attention to the attempted arrest of Palpatine. You have Mace plus three other Jedi. That or the Jedi massacre on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones are the biggest Jedi battles we're ever going to see.

not all of the sith sabers sound the same. the maul is different. its more like a luke sound

I remember someone saying they designed the sound of Maul's saber to sound more harsh and guttural, like getting cut with it would hurt more than a regular lightsaber. It certainly seems like they succeeded to me! its especially noticeable when Maul going one-on-one with Obi-Wan. I can't remember where I heard that though, so my mind could just be playing tricks on me again.

i think that the maul has its own sound category

i was at comicon and i tried out all of the sabers, and first of all the mace isnt even purple, its blueish purple, and the luke sounds the best if u make an ep4 luke replica graflex, it sounds original, and the power down effect is faster than my vader, and my friends maul
