View Full Version : What about a thread to locate others near you who enjoy the hobby?

Darth Copley
12-16-2009, 12:04 AM
Something that one of the forums I go to for a different hobby has is a thread that helps you find people that are near you. And later a member made a map type app that showed where people were on a map. Being into martial arts, I like to sword fight. No one around here that I know has a lightsaber that is duelable. I know a lot of you battle with your sabers... Just a thought. I live in the Mid West. Missouri, SW corner, Joplin. Let's spar ;)

Day by day my boss brings out my hate. Slowly I slip to the dark side.

I think it could be cool. I have friends here that will duel with me... but I have to have a few sabers first. Since they won't get their own ;)

I love this thing! But when I click on a user's "Show on map" link, it just shows the whole North American map, rather than zooming in on that user's location. Still, it's fun to scroll around and find out where people are. So far only three of us over here in Asia have entered our data. But the coolest entry, IMO, is Lawrs1, in Shetland.

So how precisely are you all placing your markers? I zoomed in on the coordinates I originally plugged in (and which I got from Yahoo! Maps, I think) and discovered my marker was a few hundred meters off. I fine-tuned it, and now it sits right on the roof of my apartment. :D I zoomed in on Stryder's marker, and if it is to be believed, TCSS is actually an underground base located beneath a large field.

I put mine right where I live, though sometimes it seems to show across the street from my house.

Why would Tim put his exact location? He doesn't want people showing up to his house and shop unannounced.

If I was LDM, I wouldn't put the exact location of my house, either. :p

Lord Maul
01-01-2010, 12:32 PM
Well Lori, anyone could just mapquest Tim's address and find his house. It's on every package you get from TCSS. It could just be that his house hadn't been built when the picture was taken. The one over my house is probably 7 years old

For work, I get to make a lovely, daily, hour long commute down I-405 to Bellevue. If anyone in the greater seattle area is interested in getting together to discuss saber building tips or whatnot, to asuage privacy concerns, a neutral location is a great possiblilty.

Well, unsurprisingly, the heaviest concentration is in the U.S. Skottsaber may be the lone African on the map, but at least he's in a real city, and host to the World Cup, no less. My favorites are Lawrs1, on the Shetland Islands, and GreaSyde, the "Lone Alaskan," who is apparently floating on a pontoon in the Pacific where there is nary a bump of dry land to be found. :p
