View Full Version : BLACK GRIP AREA

I am getting close to finishing my lightsaber, but I have a question for all of you.

I need a paint, dye, stain, something....to coat my grip area in black. I know anodizing is the best, but I have no idea where to go for that. I heard that epoxy paint is good, but I don't know where to get it. Any thoughts? Ideas? A little help, please???

Black epoxy paint shouldn't be that hard to find. It could be billed as appliance paint. I picked mine up at Lowes and I think it was one of their specific brands, American Traditions.

Many also like rhinolining which is a paint for truck beds. I've never personally used it but I believe that one has more of a texture.

well anodizein can bee done at home (alot of chemical work) paint can be nice but will wear over time and unless a abrasive added tot he paint it wont stick all that much i would suggest the rhino truck lining i think Ultra uses it on his padawan saber

With Firebirds tutorial and a can of appliance or bedliner paint you will get great results.

I have used the truck bed liner spray which you can picK up at any auto parts store or wally world and it does a nice job just mask off everything you don't want coated and the stuff is tough.

Thanks. I do know how to paint...LOL

I used to paint C141's and C5A's when I was in the service. It was more of a question on what to use for this specific purpose. Things have changed a lot in the paint world since the 70's.....sigh...

You may want to look into Powder-Coating. (Basically baking plastic onto the part) It's very durable. Only problem is finding someone that does it.

If you want something cheaper, I'd suggest the Spray-on bed liner. I've never tried it, but I've seen some good results, provided you get a good brand.

As I am having Tim machine the grooves in hilt for the grip area, I'm not sure I want a textured finish. Powercoat sounds pretty good, I will check into it and see if it can be done and for how much. I will probably go with the epoxy, since it's got a smooth finish.

Master Zhi-Don, have you considered gun bluing? Here is a website if you are interested.

I've got a guy at a auto body shop I deliver parts to that's gonna hook me up with some stuff tomorrow to finish off my S5. It's some kind of spray-on hard plastic that you can then paint and apply a final sealer coat. He was talking about putting the hilt into one of their bays where they bake on paint, and I was like, "eh, nah, I don't wanna melt the electronics." So I'll let you guys know how it goes. If it doesn't work, I'm gonna get some of the truck bed liner spray and try that.

It's probably very similar, but he called it something else. Can't remember off the top of my head.

Powdercoating works great I did all my wheels on my Van (silver) 5 years ago and often go off roading and they still look like brand new wheels, no chips, flakes or nothing. I think the main reason why is the process virtually bonds the paint as if it has become part of the metal.[8D]
There are also a couple of reasonable Powder Coating shops in the City of Orange on Batavia St.

What about that paint with sand or whatever in it? Would that work? It works on our steps. It's good for grip so why not on a hilt.

When she starts a sentence off with "A man once told me".

It's one of those evolution things so a woman can stand closer to the kitchen sink.

That would work fine so long as the metal was roughed up well, although I would think the latex version may not work to well.

It is tough to beat the truckbed spray though since it is made for the metal and serious abuse.

I need it to be smooth to show the machining that Tim is lovingly doing. I don't want that covered by a thick coating. Epoxy paint seems to be the way to go, if I can't either find a place that anodizes or powdercoats. Unless someone else has an idea.

Thanks all for your help.

you got that right. i used that stuff a while back and posted the great results i got from using it on pvc grips. as long as you round off all corners and edges the stuff stays on really well.

You can do it yourself no problem. Most sportinggoods stores that have a gun section should carry the bluing kit. It is pretty much a wipe on kinda deal, so long as your not clumsy it's not really messy. I spilled a whole bottle over my work bench about 12 years ago[;)]
