View Full Version : Anti-Vandal Switch Activation Box on Ribbed Extension?

Has anyone tried mounting an Activation Box Style 4 (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Activation-box-style-4-P415.aspx) (for the illuminated anti-vandal switches) to a ribbed extension (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/MHS-ribbed-extension-P245.aspx)? Or a fluted extension (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/4-Fluted-double-female-threaded-connector--P403.aspx)? I'm designing a hilt for someone, and want to use those switches, but the only available space is one where I want a little "jazz." The extension that is black in the image below will be a real leather grip, decorated something like the sword hilt in the photo. I'm considering the possibilities of a sink-tube overlay to cover the area where the activation box would sit on the ribbed (or fluted) extension, but I'd like to know how it would look just mounted normally. Photos would be greatly appreciated!

Mounted normally without a shroud/plate, you'd see under it through the ribs. Not TOO bad, but...meh, Id go with a shroud/plate.

Thanks, FenderBender. Lacking both a milling machine and your skills, I can't hope to do anywhere nearly as gorgeous a job as you did on your insanely great Ferus Gladius (http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showpost.php?p=138761&postcount=133), but hopefully I can wing it with my dremel and files. I'll post photos when I get to that point.

(Seriously, seeing Ferus Gladius for the first time literally made me slightly depressed, it was so far beyond anything I am currently capable of. But it also convinced me to buy a buffer/grinder. There's just no way to get that shine and those smooth edges with the buffing attachments for a dremel.)

Thanks, I really like that one too:D

Buffer-fu is DEFINATELY a requirement for this hobby. A cheap bench grinder (as long as it does 3600RPM) and a good buffing wheel and compound can work wonders.

I don't want to pick a fight with Fender here, but you may have another issue when trying to use box 4 over a ribbed section.

The reduced internal diameter of the ribbed section may make mounting the switch, even when using box 4, Tricky to say the least.

I would get some more data and preferably some measurements to make sure it will fit.

Good point, Jagahadi. I'll do some measuring, and if it looks like the illuminated switches won't fit, I may go with the much shorter, non-illuminated anti-vandal switches.

They'll fit fine with the box. Trust me.

I was thinking if you mounted it on the ribs without the shround and popped an accent led or two underneath, it may look pretty cool glaring out from under the box. May be some space constraints with the smaller ID though. Good luck.

yeah the box is made with a 1.5" radius on the bottom. most MHS pieces are 1.45" diameter so it shoud work.
